When you read the word ‘torque’, we’re talking about rotational force. You’ll have less torque turning a nut with your bare hand and more torque if you use a tool like a tire iron which gives your more leverage. Simply put, torque is the measurement of turning force required to move a rotating object.

Some of the common day-to-day actions that utilize torque include changing a car tire, loosening the lid to a water bottle, pushing your kids on a merry-go-round, and opening a door (the pushing force results in rotating the door on its hinges).

Engine torque is something you’re using every single day without a second thought. Anytime your car starts from a dead stop, or you pick up speed after slowing down your engine is using torque to make that momentum happen. When you’re transitioning to a hill in an automatic vehicle, you’ll probably notice the RPM’s go up as you begin to climb. This is your engine changing to a lower gear to apply more torque and keep the wheels turning at the same speed.

T = F * L; F= force (lbs) and L= perpendicular distance of the force area.

When torque is measured correctly, we can save unnecessary wear and tear on machines and equipment. By incorrectly measuring (even if it’s just a tiny bit off) the amount of torque our cars need to climb a hill at a particular incline and speed, we’ll burn through gas, oil, and our gears long before we could have, had we made accurate calculations.
